Update on Richmond Gang Rape: Richmond man, 43, sought in school gang rape

Could it get any worse?  I’m very happy with the way the Richmond police have handled this case. I’m not sure if it will ever be possible to find justice in this crime but I am thankful that the investigation is on going.

43-year-old Richmond man with a violent history is being sought for allegedly participating in the gang rape of a 16-year-old girl who was leaving her school’s homecoming dance, police said Friday.

Investigators said John Crane Jr. raped the Richmond High School student on Oct. 24 while she was unconscious. They have not been able to locate him, despite an intensive manhunt.

A $10,000 reward was offered Friday for information leading to the conviction of Crane, who is wanted on charges of felony sexual assault.

Six young men ages 15 to 21 have already been charged with sexually assaulting the high school sophomore, who police say was repeatedly raped for two hours while as many as 20 people watched and took photographs.

Crane “is double the age of the other suspects who have been arrested,” police Lt. Mark Gagan noted.

“He was identified through our investigation and we have not been able to apprehend him, so we are asking the public for help in locating and identifying him.”

Crane is African American, 5 feet 11 inches tall and 190 pounds, and often sports a small mustache and goatee, police said. He has a tattoo on his chest that reads “John John,” police said.

Gagan said Crane had a record of violent crime and should be considered armed and dangerous. Anyone who sees him should call police, he said.

“We don’t want people to try to apprehend him themselves,” Gagan said.

The rape prompted school officials to implement new security measures, including better lighting in the area where the girl was raped, and to form classes at Richmond High to teach nonviolence. The victim urged angry parents and residents to shun all violence.

Gagan said the police investigation into the rape is still open.

“I cannot definitively rule out that other people will be identified as suspects,” he said.
