A little background on Bill Ayers.
Bill Ayers was, in fact, a founding member of a group known as the Weathermen, who were responsible for bombings of the New York City police headquarters in 1970, of the Capitol building in 1971 and of the Pentagon in 1972 in protest of the Vietnam War.
Ayers and his wife, Bernardine Dohrn, also a Weather Underground member who worked for a brief period at Sidley Austin law firm with Michelle Obama, spent years as fugitives in the 1970s, but federal riot and bombing conspiracy charges were dropped in 1974 because of illegal wiretaps and other prosecutorial misconduct. (illegal wiretaps? didn’t obama vote in favor of allowing telecommunication companies to perform illegal wiretaps on amercian citizens in july 2008?) hmmmmm
The recent New York Times story added to the understanding of Obama’s association with Ayers, through an education project. Ayers helped Chicago win nearly $50 million for Chicago schools as part of a national school reform project, the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.
In March 1995, Obama was named chair of the six-member Chicago Annenberg Challenge board that distributed the grants. A New York Times review of archives of the Chicago Annenberg project found that the two attended six board meetings together.
Obama campaign officials acknowledge Ayers hosted a coffee in 1995 for the purpose of introducing Obama to some local political players leading up to his first run for public office. (this is important as it contradicts Obamas statement outlined below….why would Ayers host a coffee to introduce Obama to local political players if he was not endorsing Obama?) Obama campaign officials say Obama didn’t know Ayers’ past at that time. (sure he didn’t)
Asked about his relationship with Ayers at a Democratic debate on April 16, 2008, Obama said, “This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood, who’s a professor of English in Chicago who I know and who I have not received some official endorsement from. He’s not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis. And the notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8 years old, somehow reflects on me and my values doesn’t make much sense.”
The Chicago Annenberg Challenge
In 1995, the Annenberg Foundation awarded a grant of $48.2 million to a proposal submitted by Ayers, Anne Hallet, and Warren Chapman to reform Chicago’s public schools (refer to the last line of this post). The project, the Chicago Annenberg Challenge (CAC), thus was created and added millions of dollars from other foundations, including the Woods Foundation, for a total budget of nearly $100 million.
Obama, just four years out of law school, was appointed CAC president by his buddy Ayers. Obama served as CAC president until 1999 and then filled a seat on the CAC board of directors until 2001. As CAC president and then board member, Obama oversaw millions of dollars passed into community organizing and radical educational entities. Ayers, as co-founder of CAC, was the day-to-day decision-maker in constant contact with Obama, especially signing checks for CAC recipients, including the infamous voter fraud organization, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), and also the Developing Communities Project, for whom Obama had worked. Obama also had worked as a paid instructor for ACORN and later provided legal counsel to the group. Obama was an ACORN mouthpiece.
The CAC grant proposal included a vision by Ayers of school reform founded upon community organizing, grass-roots action, participatory democracy, and “change” in the existing public school structure. The whole purpose of CAC was to radicalize public education away from the fundamentals of reading, writing and mathematics and toward brainwashing children that the United States of America is an imperialistic, war-mongering, racist nation and that violence is the answer. Evaluators of CAC, after the fact, determined that the $100 million boondoggle presented no evidence of educational improvement. Just where did all those millions go?
After CAC closed down, Obama served on a successor group for “change” called the Leadership Council of the Chicago Public Schools Education Fund. And guess who served with him — Ayers’ brother John and their father Thomas.
Obama’s Stimulus Package….$4.19 Billion for ACORN!
Fast forward to January 2009. The Obama Stimulus Plan has incorporated language that earmarks a good portion of $4.19 BILLION for ACORN & friends like Bill Ayers.
